Punta Ninfas
The wildest coast of Golfo Nuevo
Beyond the usual routes, Punta Ninfas preserves the remote character of Atlantic Patagonia.
The experience
The excursion begins in Puerto Madryn, from where we travel approximately 90 km southeast into one of the most remote sections of the Chubut coast. The service operates in sedan-type vehicles or minibuses. At Punta Ninfas we encounter a landscape of great cliffs with panoramic ocean views, pristine beaches and natural rocky tidal flats. We also discover the surroundings of the historic Punta Ninfas Lighthouse, which has long served as a navigational reference at the entrance to Golfo Nuevo. The experience continues on foot. Accompanied by the guide, we approach the coastal area inhabited by a resident colony of southern elephant seals. The animals remain at Punta Ninfas throughout the year and can be observed in their natural environment, always from a prudent distance and with respect for their space. Depending on the time of year, and purely as a chance encounter with nature, southern right whales and orcas may also be seen passing offshore. As the wildlife is completely free-ranging, these sightings cannot be guaranteed. After exploring the area, we return to Puerto Madryn.

The place
Punta Ninfas lies approximately 90 km southeast of Puerto Madryn, marking one of the entrances to Golfo Nuevo. It is a remote, virtually untouched landscape dominated by high cliffs, pristine beaches and rocky tidal flats beside the Atlantic. A resident colony of southern elephant seals lives here throughout the year. Unlike other wildlife areas in the region, this ecosystem is not within a protected reserve or park, making respectful visits under the guide’s instructions especially important.
Why we love it
Because it reveals a lonelier, wilder Patagonia. There is little infrastructure and no staged circuit: the appeal lies in walking through an almost untouched coastal landscape and observing elephant seals in the wild, with a guide helping visitors approach the environment responsibly.

Recommendations
The elephant seal colony lives in a natural, fragile and vulnerable ecosystem, so it is essential to follow the guide’s instructions, keep a safe distance from the animals and avoid any behavior that could alter them. The excursion is available year-round, although summer is especially recommended. Elephant seals are present throughout the year; any possible whale or orca sightings, however, depend on season and the animals’ natural behavior.
Restrictions
Good physical condition required. Not suitable for people afraid of heights. Not recommended for people with respiratory conditions. Not recommended for people with heart conditions.
Weather policy
The excursion is subject to weather and road conditions. If conditions are unsuitable, the operator may reschedule the day or time or modify/cancel part of the route, even on the day of the excursion. If weather, tides or impassable roads require the itinerary to be shortened or altered, the operator states that no refund applies. If the operator cancels the excursion entirely due to weather and cannot reschedule it within the passenger’s stated stay, 100% of the amount paid will be refunded. Wildlife is free and wild. Therefore, sightings of a particular species or behavior cannot be guaranteed, and lack of sightings does not entitle guests to a refund.
