The experience
The experience begins with hotel pick-up in El Chaltén. Aboard a minibus, we travel approximately 37 km towards Lago del Desierto, accompanied by an audio guide in Spanish and English introducing the history and landscapes of this mountain route. A panoramic photo stop is also made along the way. On arrival at Lago del Desierto, approximately 4 hours of free time are available to explore the area. At the northern end of the lake, we head towards Estancia Lago del Desierto, where access to the Huemul Glacier trail is located. From here, a self-guided walk climbs through Andean-Patagonian lenga forest. The first section crosses humid areas that can be somewhat slippery; as altitude is gained, the forest begins to open, revealing views over Lago del Desierto and the surrounding mountains. The trail gains approximately 150 metres of elevation. After around 45 minutes of ascent, we reach the natural viewpoint overlooking the Huemul Glacier lagoon: a small turquoise body of water fed by meltwater, with the glacier suspended above rocky walls and surrounded by peaks and Patagonian vegetation. On clear days, Fitz Roy can also be seen to the south during the walk. There is time to rest, take photographs and enjoy the scenery. Continuing beyond the lagoon or walking on the glacier is not permitted. The return follows the same trail to Estancia Lago del Desierto. After the walk, the remaining free time can be enjoyed by the lake before meeting the vehicle again for the return to El Chaltén.

The place
Lago del Desierto lies about 37 km north of El Chaltén, at the end of a valley surrounded by Andean-Patagonian forest, mountains and glaciers. From its northern end, the trail to Huemul Glacier climbs through lenga forest to a small turquoise lagoon fed by meltwater. On clear days, the route also offers views towards Cerro Fitz Roy to the south.
Why we love it
Because it combines two very different landscapes in a single outing: first, the scenic journey to Lago del Desierto; then, a short but intense walk through the forest to come face to face with Huemul Glacier. It is an excellent option for travellers who want to add a panoramic trek without devoting a full day to a long-distance hike.
Between forest and mountains, a hidden glacier above turquoise water.

A hidden corner between forest and ice
The road to Lago del Desierto is already part of the experience. Forests, mountains and increasingly remote landscapes accompany the journey to the northern end of the valley. From there, a trail through lenga trees leads to a small turquoise lagoon, where Huemul Glacier appears suspended among the rocks: one of those views that reveals the most serene side of El Chaltén.
