Cerro Tronador & Black Glacier

Cerro Tronador & Black Glacier

A day among Patagonian forests, mountains and ice

Approximately 9 hoursNature

A route that leaves Bariloche behind and enters one of Nahuel Huapi National Park’s most powerful landscapes.

The experience

The excursion departs Bariloche in the morning and enters one of the most striking areas of Nahuel Huapi National Park. Along the way, the scenery moves through forests, lakes, beaches, mountains and waterfalls, gradually approaching Cerro Tronador, whose summit reaches 3,478 metres. One of the central moments of the day is arrival at Ventisquero Negro, a glacier whose dark appearance contrasts with the white ice higher on Tronador. The Manso River rises in this same area, descending from the mountain through rapids and waterfalls. After the visits, we return to Bariloche, with arrival expected around 6:00 p.m.

The place

Cerro Tronador rises to 3,478 metres above sea level and forms part of the natural border between Argentina and Chile. It is the highest peak in the area and is distinguished by glaciers and permanent snow. The Manso River also rises in this environment, descending from Tronador in rapids and waterfalls before continuing towards the Pacific.

Why we love it

Because in a single day it takes you from Bariloche’s characteristic lake landscapes into a much wilder world of mountains and glaciers. The road is part of the experience: forests, lakes, beaches and waterfalls accompany the journey until Ventisquero Negro, where the landscape shifts to an entirely different scale.

From forest to ice, a journey towards the heart of the Patagonian mountains.
