Horseback Ride by Escondido Lake with Lunch
A horseback ride through the Fuegian forest to Escondido Lake, ending with a traditional barbecue at a mountain refuge.
This is a half-day excursion. It begins with pickup, either in the morning or afternoon, from the respective accommodations before heading toward the lake district along National Route No. 3. Along the way we cross peat valleys and the Andes at Garibaldi Pass. We visit the refuge at the rural property Laguna Escondida, founded by our family in 1956 and located 55 km from Ushuaia in the heart of the Andes. The Bronzovich family settled in this area to work with lenga, the local timber. This is the starting point for our horseback ride. The guide selects the appropriate Criollo horse for each rider according to their level. We use comfortable, lightweight saddles that make the ride easier and more agile. This moment of human-animal connection is something we value deeply. Horses are a family tradition, and we are ambassadors in Tierra del Fuego of pato, Argentina’s national sport. Horses are our passion, and we want to share it. We ride into the Fuegian subantarctic forest, where different species of Nothofagus trees can be observed. We also follow part of the old Route No. 3 to the shores of Escondido Lake, where the horses can drink while we take in a unique panoramic view of the lake, valleys, forests, and mountains that reflects our love for this part of the island. Returning to the refuge, we enjoy a traditional mid-morning snack or country-style afternoon tea surrounded by our new friends. After lunch, we head back to the city carrying experiences and sensory impressions that make this horseback ride a truly memorable journey.
