The experience

The experience begins in Puerto Pirámides, where we board to navigate the waters of Golfo Nuevo in search of southern right whales. The navigation lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes and operates within a radius of up to 10 miles, although the exact route varies on each departure according to the location of the animals. Once on the water, nature sets the pace. Accompanied by a whale-watching guide, we interpret the movements and behaviour of the whales while navigating one of Península Valdés’ most representative coastal landscapes. During the route, we may also observe sea lions at their haul-out sites and different bird species typical of the Patagonian coast, adding further wildlife encounters to the navigation. After approximately an hour and a half, we return to the port of Puerto Pirámides.

The place

The navigation departs from Puerto Pirámides, the only town on Península Valdés and the departure point for southern right whale-watching trips during the season. Located approximately 100 km from Puerto Madryn on the protected waters of Golfo Nuevo, this small coastal village is the authorised port for whale-watching navigation. Between June and December, southern right whales arrive in the waters of the area, making Puerto Pirámides one of Patagonia’s emblematic places to observe them in the wild.

Why we love it

Because it offers the classic way to experience one of Patagonia’s great wildlife encounters. From a boat and with interpretation by a specialised guide, the experience allows you to observe whales at the surface and better understand their behaviour, always respecting their movements and their own timing.

Recommendations

The stated season runs from June to December. As the whales are free-ranging wildlife, the boat route and sighting locations change on every departure. We recommend booking in advance and reconfirming the navigation time before departure, as the activity depends on weather and operational conditions. Guests staying in Puerto Madryn must arrange transfer to Puerto Pirámides separately. We recommend combining the navigation with Península Valdés or a “Whales Only” excursion.

Weather policy

The navigation is subject to weather conditions and the operational status of the port. If conditions are unsuitable, the operator may reschedule the day or time or modify/cancel part of the service. If the port closes and the whale-watching trip is cancelled, the operator states that the amount paid for the navigation is refunded. If a guest booked a land tour + boat programme and only the navigation is cancelled, the value of the whale-watching trip is refunded but not the land excursion. Whales and all other species observed are free-ranging wild animals. The operator cannot guarantee their presence or behaviour, and the absence of sightings during an operated departure does not entitle the guest to a refund.

Sailing from Puerto Pirámides means approaching the world of the southern right whale while respecting distance, movement and nature’s unpredictable rhythm.
